Are BANANA PEELS good for plants? Easy homemade fertilizer!
One of the best homemade fertilizer to boost flowering is made from Banana peels. It is easy, effective and very cheap to make. This is an excellent DIY remedy to make your plants bloom profusely.
Banana peels are rich in potassium which is one of the main components of NPK fertiliser, that promotes flowers and fruits. It is also helpful in boosting the growth of permanent green plants that are kept outdoors.
MAKE BANANA PEEL FERTILIZER AT HOME
- Take about 1 litre of water & immerse one peel into it completely. You can also chop the peel as per the size of container.
- Cover the jar with a mesh lid or any cloth. Make sure it is not airtight. A see-through material, like glass helps you keep a check on mould formation.
- Keep checking the water level as any exposed part of the peel will rot.
- After 2-3 days, the water will appear muddy.
- Filter the liquid.
- Dilute it with equal quantity of water.
- Pour in a spray bottle & spray over plants.
- The leftover peel can be put in the compost pile.
Which plants benefit the most from banana peel fertilizer?
- Flowering plants, in particular benefit from a quick boost of nutrients, hence it is good for seasonal flowers.
Do we need fresh banana peels for fertilizer?
- You can use peels that may be a day old but do not collect them for many days, as they may cause rot and mould. This fertilizer is best made fresh in small quantity.
What can we do with old banana peels , in the garden?
- You can dry them and powder to mix in potting soil OR chop them and add to compost.
Can we use banana peel fertilizer on indoor plants?
NO. It is not advisable while the plants are kept indoors. They may attract all sorts of insects and mould.
