The versatile Curry Patta ( Botanical name – MURRAYA KOINIGII ) is a staple in Indian cooking, specially down South (which is one of my favorite cuisines). Up North, it is much more popular for it’s benefits to Hair (refer to the long black hair South Indian beauties flaunt). Either way, since curry patta lends itself to various culinary, health & beauty uses, it makes sense to grow your own fresh supply of leaves for everyday consumption. Also, it helps that curry patta is extremely easy to grow in anything from a small pot to the ground becoming a large tree supplying fresh leaves in all seasons.

I live in North India but absolutely LOVE cooking (& eating )all those dishes that require a touch of curry patta. Also being a DIY skin & hair fanatic, curry patta is one of my favorite ingredients to use in homemade hair oils. No wonder, i never want my supply to run out and take some extra care to keep my plant going, even in winters.

GROW CURRY PATTA – CARE TIPS

First off, it really does matter what are you growing it in.

A larger pot is always better than a small container, obviously. Plant in ground only if you have enough space and do not plan to move. Grown in ground, it turns into a tree over a few years so make the commitment accordingly. If you wish for a large plant, it will grow well in a big cement pot as well. For herbs, the general rule is to use terracotta or cement instead of plastic. It is less toxic and more breathable for the roots.

Second, location matters!

Curry patta needs full sun to grow be it summers or winters. So, choose a spot that gets good sunlight during noon and plant there. This will help your plant a lot in winters, especially.

The easiest thing to do is take 2-3 tea-spoons of Curd and add a few sprinkles of Hing (asafoetida). Mix this in about a liter of water. That’s it! Feed this to the plant every 15 days for vigorous healthy growth. This will take care of pests and diseases as well.

Also don’t forget to harvest regularly.

  • Use the fresh leaves for cooking.
  • Add the older leaves to oils.
  • You can also harvest extra leaves & dry them. Use in curries & doughs.
