GROW GERANIUMS IN YOUR GARDEN FROM SEEDS WITH 7 EASY STEPS
- USE WELL-DRAINING SOIL
- Get some well-textured sandy soil in a pot/tray.
- You can also use the potting soil used for geranium plants.
- WATER CHECK
- Do a draining test. Pour water and wait.
- Water should neither run down from the sides nor keep standing. It should wet the soil evenly and drain away.
- SOW SEEDS THINLY
- Mix geranium seeds with a handful of sand before sowing. This helps to space seeds evenly and avoid thinning later.
- Don’t over-crowd. Seeds need proper space to develop healthy roots.
- Water again.
- KEEP COVERED
- Cover with some compost or vermiculite.
- You can also use a layer of vermicompost mixed with sand but cover thinly.
- NO DIRECT SUN
- Keep in partial shade.
- Ensure enough natural light but no direct sunlight over the seeds/seedlings.
- KEEP IT DAMP NOT WET
- Keep it damp (not wet).
- You will see sprouts in about 3-4 days with good quality geranium seeds.
- Older seeds may take longer to come up.
- Do not let it dry out completely. This will kill germination.
- TRANSPLANT CAREFULLY
- Let the seedlings develop at-least 2 sets of true leaves before transplanting.
- Use Epsom salt while transplanting to reduce shock and prevent geranium seedlings from dying.
GROWING GERANIUMS FROM SEEDS vs CUTTINGS
- When you are planting cuttings, you always know what variety you are growing. There are no surprises.
- Seeds offer a mixed variety. Something rare and unusual may come up too.
- Cuttings are quick to flower. You can start getting blooms in less than one month.
- Seeds take a few months to form plants and start flowering.
- Cuttings can be started anytime. Geraniums are easy to root.
- Seeds need a particular temperature for germination and delicate seedlings need care.
- Cuttings offer almost 100% success. They can be rooted in either soil or water.
- Seeds germinate according to their quality and freshness.
- Cuttings can be borrowed from anyone.
- Seeds need to be bought as most gardeners are unable to save geranium seeds from their plants.
When i first started gardening, I was awe-struck by geraniums, in particular. I still don’t know if it is about the scented beautiful leaves or the bunches of florets but my love for geraniums stands rock solid! What I didn’t know back then was that it is extremely easy to grow Geraniums from seeds. Yes, as a beginner, geraniums looked too exotic to me to be grown from seed but as they say, experience matters! All you need is a packet of seeds from a reliable source
