HOW TO PROPAGATE SUCCULENT LEAVES IN 5 EASY STEPS

  1. COLLECT LEAVES – Take a few succulent leaves and let them dry for a few hours in shade. You can take old leaves from the bottom of the plant.
  2. CHOOSE A SHADED SPOT – Place the leaves inside any container ON TOP OF the soil. There is no need to insert them. Lay the leaves horizontally. You can do this in a planter already having a plant, under which the succulent leaves can root.
  3. WAIT FOR ROOTS – You will first see tiny roots emerging followed by growth o a new plant at the base of the leaf. The original leaf will start to shrink and die. It is normal.
  4. WATER OCCASSIONALY – Keep the soil damp and do not overwater. The new plant will soon grow big and be ready to move to a pot of its own.
  5. ROOTING IN WATER – You can also place fresh succulent leaves in water. Only the base of the leaf should touch the water surface. When you see roots coming, place the leaf over soil to allow a new plant to grow.

TIPS FOR GROWING SUCCULENTS WITHOUT KILLING THEM

  • SOIL – Succulents prefer light sandy and gritty soil. Avoid clayey heavy soil. Do not use cocopeat for succulents soil mixture. Good drainage is preferred.
  • WATER – Do not overwater. Succulent leaves retain water. Too much more will kill them. Water sparingly and occasionally. Misting is fine too. If the container has no drainage then never water till the soil seems dry. Too much moisture will kill them quickly.
  • SUNLIGHT – Most succulents can tolerate full sunlight and stay healthy. Some varieties are sensitive and if the seem to start becoming soggy or yellow, reduce watering and move to a shaded spot or under a large plant.
  • SPACE – Succulents can grow in any container or pot size. They will fill the entire space slowly so you can divide them every year or so to give more space and also get some new plants as a bonus.
  • CLEANING – Every pot with a full grown succulent will definitely have baby plants at the bottom that come up from old leaves. Transfer them to their own individual pots. Keep the base of the plant clean to avoid fungus and rotting. Keep the soil well aerated.
  • INDOORS – Contrary to popular belief, succulents do not last for long indoors. You can either rotate the pots or keep them next to a large window with good sunlight otherwise stick to growing them outdoors. Keep changing the direction of sun exposure for even growth.
