SUMMER FLOWER GROWING TIPS FOR BEGINNERS – MAKE THEM BLOOM ALL SEASON
- To maximise the blooming duration, sow all of these as soon as spring begins (end of February) or when the night temperature starts to go up.
- Sowing seeds too late causes them to sprout and die due to the heat, instead of growing.
- Balsam seeds can be planted later in summers around the month of May.
- It is easier to grow portulaca from cuttings instead of sowing seeds. Once they bloom, let them die off at the end of season and do not remove. The will come back every year after that, by themselves. Portulaca self-seeds easily. Same applies to Balsam.
- Coleus is best grown from cuttings but seeds offer a greater variety. Coleus does not die during winters, you can keep it near a wall and it will keep thriving.
- Caladium is grown from bulbs and you can let them stay in the ground so that they can multiply for next season. Do not water too much, use a separate pot, do not plant any other plant with the bulbs.
- To get a bunch of blooms on zinnia, pinch the first bud.
Here’s a quick, easy guide on how to grow summer flowers from seeds
- Take any container that is at-least 6″ wide and 3″-4″ deep OR use seed-sowing trays. A normal garden pot also does the job if you are not sowing too many seeds.
- Fill with good quality garden soil, a handful of compost and some sand. If the soil is too hard and clay-like then add a handful of cocopeat, as well.
- Keep the top 1/4th of the pot empty.
- Sprinkle seeds evenly but not tightly otherwise the seedlings will not get space to grow. If you are using a 6″ wide pot, try to sow only half a (growers) packet of seeds. No matter how small the seeds look, if you overfill the seedlings will compete for space and die.
- Cover the seeds according to their size.
- Keep them at a shaded spot that gets ample light but not direct sunlight. It is optional to cover the container with a thin cloth till seeds sprout.
- Water at the same time daily and make sure there is no standing water, It should drain out in some time.
- You will spot seedlings soon. Let them grow at least 3-4 pairs of true leaves before transplanting.
Should we cover seeds after sowing and how much soil to layer?
If the seeds are visible to naked eye after sowing, cover them with a layer of soil that is thick twice their diameter. If the seeds are almost invisible e.g. petunia, do not cover them with soil.
